Unlocking Your Potential: The Balance Between Action and Rest

Is it fair to say you'd like to be healthier, happier, and more successful? If you're nodding, you're not alone. Many believe that achieving these goals requires extraordinary effort, time, and unwavering commitment. The notion that action is the key to change is widespread. And while there is some truth to it, there's more to the story.

Yes, achieving any goal involves action, commitment, perseverance, consistency, and repetition. However, if you're not careful, you can become a "human doing" rather than a "human being." Constantly pushing yourself and engaging your sympathetic nervous system—your body's fight-or-flight response—can lead to chronic stress. This state triggers hormones that prepare your body for action but can detract from other vital functions. Over time, this relentless drive can leave you feeling exhausted, ill, and unhappy.

The Power of Rest and Relaxation

In our fast-paced, modern society, it's easy to overlook or even sacrifice happiness and moderation. Yet, your body repairs itself when it's at rest—when you're relaxing and sleeping. This is the realm of your parasympathetic nervous system, often called the "rest and digest" system. This system allows your body to repair damage, overcome illnesses, and grow. But this recuperation process needs time—anywhere from several minutes to hours.

When you're happy, you're more likely to stay motivated towards your goals. You see and feel the benefits not only for yourself but potentially for others and the world as a whole. Happiness boosts your drive, making you more resilient and persistent.

A Real-Life Example: Finding Balance

Consider the story of an amazing canoeist I worked with. She was overwhelmed by work, which was causing her significant stress and unhappiness. No matter what she did, she felt powerless to improve her work environment. Through our discussions, it became clear that she was focusing on the aspects she couldn't change instead of those she could.

By shifting her perspective, she realised that while her job was stressful, it also provided stability and ample spare time to enjoy her favourite sport. This new viewpoint spurred her into action. Not only did she continue to enjoy canoeing, but she also became a qualified coach, helping others to enjoy the sport as well.

The Importance of Self-Care

You can have the best goals, the determination to succeed, and the perfect exercise and meal plan. But if you don't give your body time to rest and allow yourself to be happy, you'll never achieve the results you desire. Start by being kind to yourself. Sometimes, you have to be selfish to be selfless.

An overused analogy, but still true: if a plane has a decompression emergency, you cannot help others with their oxygen masks if you're unconscious without your own. Prioritise your well-being, and you'll be better equipped to help others.

Action Steps for Busy Professionals

  1. Schedule Downtime: Make sure to carve out time in your schedule for rest and relaxation. This could be a short nap, a leisurely walk, or simply sitting quietly with a book.
  2. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in activities that promote mindfulness, such as meditation or yoga. These practices can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system and promote healing.
  3. Focus on Joy: Identify activities that bring you joy and make time for them. Whether it's a hobby, a sport, or spending time with loved ones, these moments can rejuvenate your spirit.
  4. Reframe Your Mindset: Shift your focus from what you can't change to what you can. This mental shift can significantly reduce stress and improve your overall outlook on life.
  5. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of stress and fatigue when your body signals that it needs rest, and honour that need.

Conclusion

To be healthier, happier, and more successful, balance is key. Yes, take action towards your goals, but also give yourself permission to rest and be happy. By nurturing both your body and mind, you'll unlock your true potential and achieve lasting success. So, take a moment to breathe, relax, and enjoy the journey. You're worth it.
