Know Yourself!
Jul 11, 2022Over the last two previous Blogs (and their linked Video’s) I have covered some of the areas within business that you may well need to pay some attention
to. I have also covered some additional things that you may well want to reflect on in relation to your personal life. Having all the detail means you
will be more likely to achieve the goals you set, because your brain is already occupied, active and thinking in that positive place.

However, sometimes things happen at work that you don’t necessarily have much control over these! And you may not understand what has happened or your reaction to these things. Even if you do, you may not know what to do next.
What I am alluding to here is “archetypes”, or personality types. Now I am sure you are familiar with the personality tests that many
organisations use as part of their interview process. During which candidates answer a whole host of questions. Their answers “kind of give” the prospective
employer an idea of what sort of person they are and how they may fit in to that organisation.
Have you ever taken one of these tests, or considered that they might be really useful for understanding yourself? They could help you in understanding
why you are drawn to do certain things one way, or sometimes be drawn to do things the opposite way! Now these archetypes, they are typical stereotypes.
It’s just a generalisation, it’s not going to be specifically 100% about you! But it does give you the ability to start to understand what character traits
you have. So, in the future when you start to exhibit them, it gives you the choice to ask yourself, “do I want to continue to respond in this way” or “do I
want to change”.
A simple example of this could be – you’re driving in your car and somebody overtakes, pulls in front cutting you up, and then slows down. You might feel
yourself starting to get angry. Recognising that building anger – you can choose to either let the anger overflow and therefore drive aggressively back.
Or you can choose to recognise the building anger and just think; “What’s the problem with their day? I’m not going to react”, and just go on to drive
normally and courteously.
This self-examination of your own character traits is something that you can easily do going forward. And then, in future, you can act to make sure that
you’re presenting yourself in the most positive way. Or are you just going to ignore it and be a slave to your own emotions?
I would like to leave you with this thought: “If you can take control of your mind, you can take control of your success”.
