A big thank you to James Waters of DogFriendly.

Imagine combining your love for water adventures with the companionship of your furry friend. Martin Sharp, an award-winning coach, has mastered this with over 30 years of experience in various paddlesports, including Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP). He shares his passion with his dogs, turning each outing into a joyous, shared adventure.

You, too, can embark on this exciting journey with some basic training and equipment. Whether you're paddling through Scotland's lochs, England's lakes, or exploring the UK's vast coastline and rivers, SUP offers endless exploration opportunities. It's a fantastic way to improve your health and enjoy the great outdoors with your dog, who makes an ideal paddlesport companion.

Starting is easier than you think. With a bit of tuition, you'll quickly learn the ropes. Dogs adapt well to the activity, especially if they are comfortable in water and trained well. Introduce your dog to the SUP on land first, offering praise and rewards, and ensure both of you are comfortable before hitting the water.

Safety is paramount. Equip yourself and your dog with personal flotation devices and never paddle alone. Joining a local canoe club can provide expert guidance, equipment trials, and a supportive community. You'll find thousands of miles of paddling routes, though it's essential to check access rights and insurance coverage.

Pack light but smart for your trips: a SUP board, paddle, leash, and safety gear for you and your dog. Regular breaks and a few essentials like water, snacks, and a first aid kit will keep both of you happy and safe.

For ongoing advice and community support, connect with local paddlers. You'll find camaraderie and plenty of shared experiences. Happy paddling!
