Martin Sharp was recently on the Beyond the Hustle Podcast sharing his story and the blueprint that helped him recover from burnout, enabling me to run marathons, lead 7-figure projects, and actually enjoy life again. In this episode, they also talked about the “3 AM Trap” that drains entrepreneurs, why stress can be your secret weapon, how to say “no” (without the guilt) and non-negotiable habits every high achiever needs.

This inspired us to take a deeper dive into the topic of stress and how it can be used to fuel success. When most people hear "stress," they think burnout, belly fat, and sleepless nights. But not all stress is bad—and neither is cortisol, the hormone behind it.

At Sharp Fit for Life, we coach high-performing professionals to reclaim their health and energy without sacrificing business success. One key mindset shift? Stop demonising stress—start managing it.

What Is Cortisol (and Why Do You Need It)?

Cortisol is your body’s natural response to stress. It:

  •  Boosts energy
  •  Helps burn carbs
  •  Supports brain function
  •  Regulates blood pressure

In fact, cortisol helps you wake up, power through workouts, and respond to challenges. It only becomes a problem when it’s chronically elevated—a common issue for busy execs who rarely switch off.

Too Much Cortisol = Trouble

If you’re always “on,” cortisol builds up and starts to work against you:

  •  Fat gain (especially around your waist)
  •  Cravings and emotional eating
  •  Muscle breakdown
  •  Sleep disruption
  •  Low energy and brain fog

 Make Cortisol Work For You

You can’t avoid stress, but you can manage it. Here’s how:

  •  Move smart: Use exercise to release stress, not stack it. Daily walks or moderate workouts are powerful.
  •  Sleep well: Quality rest clears cortisol and restores energy.
  •  Breathe and slow down: Deep breathing, short walks, or quick reflection can activate your body’s recovery mode.
  •  Fuel up: Balance blood sugar with real food—especially protein and fiber.
  •  Shift your mindset: Accept stress, take small actions, and move forward.

Bottom Line

Cortisol isn’t the villain. It’s a powerful tool—if you learn how to use it. High achievers don’t eliminate stress; they manage it with purpose.
