Jan 16, 2023I was recently featured on BBC Look North Evening News talking about coming Back to Yorkshire after another incredible snow sculpting adventure with my long time friend Justin Scott. We’ve just returned from Austria, where we participated in an international snow sculpting competition, and now sharing how it all went https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mj5m
A big thank you to BBC Look North Evening News team!
This year, we tackled a big project—literally. We sculpted a sailing boat out of 200 tons of snow over the course of seven days. Our goal was to create something interactive, allowing people to climb on the boat and experience it up close. While we finished in ninth place, we’re really proud of what we achieved. The judges may not have fully appreciated our vision, but the local visitors loved it, including some big names like the CEO of Laurent-Perrier and the head of the local tourist board.
Snow sculpting has become a bit of a tradition for us, and it’s something we look forward to every year. The camaraderie among the sculptors, the amazing hospitality, and the sheer fun of creating something massive from snow keep us coming back. This year’s competition was challenging, but it was also a blast, especially when you’re working alongside your best mate of 20 years.
While we do get a bit of time to enjoy the slopes on skis or snowboards, most of our focus is on the sculpture. And after a week of intense work, we’re usually in recovery mode, gearing up for the next project. Speaking of which, we’re not done with the snow just yet. We’re heading out to Sweden next week to participate in the Kiruna Snow Festival, located 140 kilometers inside the Arctic Circle. There, we’ll be sculpting under the northern lights—an experience we’re really looking forward to.
People often ask how our families feel about us jetting off to these snowy locations. The truth is, it’s a tough gig, but someone’s got to do it! From dog sleds to snowmobiles, and hopefully some stunning views of the northern lights, it’s going to be another amazing adventure.
For now, we’re back in Yorkshire, adjusting to life after a week of snow and ice. But with another trip on the horizon, it won’t be long before we’re back out there, carving away in the cold. Thanks for following along with our journey, and I can’t wait to share more stories from our upcoming adventures in Lapland!
