Jan 14, 2022Carving Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards: My Experience in the Austrian Alps
I’ve just been featured on BBC Radio Gloucestershire talking about having the chance to work on a pretty unique project in the Austrian Alps. My partner and I were part of an international snow sculpting competition, where we were tasked with creating a massive snow sculpture of Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards https://www.bbc.co.uk/schedules/p00fzl7n
A big thank you to Mark Cummings and the BBC Radio Gloucestershire team!
The setting was as picturesque as you’d imagine—snow-covered mountains, Alpine pines, and that clear mountain air. But we weren’t just there to enjoy the view; we were there to turn 200 tons of snow into a tribute to Eddie, one of Britain’s most beloved sports figures.
This competition has been running for almost 30 years, and this year’s theme was winter sports. When we heard that, Eddie was the first person who came to mind. His story of determination and grit has inspired so many, and we wanted to capture that in our sculpture.
We had to work with what we could bring with us—just a few saws, spades, and other basic tools. Despite the limited gear, we managed to shape a snow pile the size of a double-decker bus into something that really started to resemble Eddie. Once we got his eyes and glasses carved, it all began to come together. The mustache, chin, and ski goggles followed, and we could see Eddie’s likeness emerging from the snow.
In addition to capturing Eddie’s features, we included elements like the ski jumps and Olympic rings. It’s been a lot of work, and we’re down to the final details now, with just a few hours left to finish up.
This project has been about more than just sculpting—it’s been a chance to pay tribute to Eddie’s spirit. He may not have been the best ski jumper, but his determination made him a legend. It’s been a rewarding experience to bring that story to life in snow.
We haven’t had a chance to speak with Eddie since we started, but he was excited about the project when we last exchanged emails. I hope he likes what we’ve done, and I’m looking forward to sharing the final result.
It’s been a great experience, and I’m proud of what we’ve created. This has been a memorable project, and I’m glad to have had the opportunity to celebrate Eddie "The Eagle" in such a unique way.
