Surrey Three Peaks Challenge

Thank you, Surrey, for a wonderful hike!

What an amazing 35km and completely different to the other 3 peak challenges in the UK, though perhaps a name change to the Six Surrey Summits may be more appropriate as along side the 3 hills of Leith Hill (294m), Holmbury Hill (261m) and Box Hill (224m) our route also took in Denbies Farm/Vineyard (168m), Sewer’s Copse (219m) and Ranmore Common (191m), which along with the other little hills along the way provided a elevation gain of 1536m.

Probably one of the most stark contrasts, though, is remaining below the tree line, which was a godsend on such a warm and sunny day. The canopy cover provided much-appreciated shade for us throughout the day.

I am not going to deny that, as these North Down hills are surrounded by towns, villages and major road infrastructure, I wasn’t expecting to have a feeling of being in the countryside. Certainly, I was surprised to find many silent places unspoilt by noise pollution from urban sprawl, cars or aircraft. The route we took was enjoyable and on many occasions, it felt more remote than it really was.

The treat of going up Leith Tower, atop Leith Hill, the highest spot in the south of England. With its top floor being over 1016ft above sea level (higher than the Shard 1016ft). We could see across to London, making out the world-famous landmarks by eye and even seeing the London Eye through binoculars. Then, turning 180° to see the south coast, though we couldn’t quite make out the waters of the English Channel.

Holmbury Hill was a steep gully scramble just before the top, before once again being treated to fabulous views across to the south coast, along with an Iron Age hillfort.

The hike back to Box Hill was double the pace of the outward journey, reaching the summit as the sun was going down, enjoying the amazing colours on a warm summer’s evening.

Everyone did amazingly well, the whole idea came to fruition as we needed to test equipment and techniques ahead of the Kilimanjaro trek in September, all objectives were accomplished. We enjoyed a well-deserved beer (zero Guinness for me) and a cheeseburger to end the day.

Looking forward to the next adventure.
