Carrauntoohil: Ireland’s Highest Mountain
Carrauntoohil, standing at 1,038 metres (3,407 feet), is the tallest mountain in Ireland and the crown jewel of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks range in County Kerry. It’s a rugged and breathtaking landscape that draws walkers, climbers, and adventure seekers from around the world.
What Makes It Special?
Carrauntoohil is more than just a mountain, it’s a symbol of Irish adventure. Its summit, marked by a tall iron cross, is often shrouded in mist, adding to the sense of mystery and accomplishment when you finally reach the top.
The area is known for its wild beauty, ever-changing weather, and sense of solitude, making every ascent a unique experience. Whether you’re chasing a personal challenge, exploring Ireland’s highest landscapes, or simply reconnecting with nature, Carrauntoohil delivers a powerful reminder of how awe-inspiring the outdoors can be. The mountain rises sharply from the green valleys and glacial lakes of the Iveragh Peninsula, offering dramatic ridges, steep ascents, and unforgettable views across the Kerry countryside. Its name is often translated from Irish as “Inverted Sickle,” a nod to the mountain’s distinctive, sweeping shape.
Our Experience: A Message From Martin Sharp
"What a fantastic day walking in the beautiful MacGillycuddy’s Reeks with 6 of Ireland’s highest peaks to climb, including the highest mountain in Ireland, Carrauntoohil. With the downpours the night before and the storms due the day after, we felt very blessed that on the day, the clouds stayed away and the sun shone on the Emerald Isle. And the isle certainly shone back with all its glory. Probably one of the most exquisite mountains and a great bunch of people to enjoy the experience with.
Thank you to Pat Falvey Adventure Travel / Personal Development / Corporate Training for the invite and for being an incredible host"
